World War 2 Rationing - In Primary Seven

19th Oct 2018

Continuing in the P.7 theme of WW2 the children are learning about rationing and together they made 2 fruit cakes. The first was an authentic recipe from 1940 using no rationed items and the second was a similar cake this time with modern ingredients. They measured out the ingredients using scales, added and mixed them and prepared the cooking tins. As the puddings were steaming the children moved their focus onto the Belfast Blitz and made some colourful artwork, hand drawing the silhouette of Harland and Wolff over a fiery, smoky sky during a night of air raids. Once the cakes were ready they then had a taste session to see what they thought of each recipe. Some liked them both equally and some were swayed one way or the other but each cake was in even demand.
